Illinois: land
of the free and home of
the spineless
Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer
August 29, 2005
The recent decision
by a legislative rules committee of the State of Illinois to confirm
the April executive order of Governor Blagojevich wiping out conscience
protection for Illinois pharmacists is, quite frankly, heinous.
Professional pharmacists in Illinois who have serious conscientious
concerns about killing babies with powerful chemicals are now just
going to have to shut up and sit down and ally their practices to
a communist-style dictat from the governor from hell. Where, really,
is this country heading?
The current
state of the leadership of the culture of death in America is frightening.
In their fear that pro-lifers may actually be acting out of their
own deeply-held convictions—which generally indicates a person
who will be difficult to sway in the opposite direction when it
comes to elections—we are faced with a growing threat to our
very consciences which could very well be violated by extreme decrees
like governors’ executive orders or other power-hungry public
officials. California did this a few years ago in mandating abortifacient
birth control coverage by Catholic institutions; and now Gov. Blagojevich
and the Illinois legislature has seriously upped the ante of coercion
by his executive order which a rules committee, acting like a little
tin-god, has upheld as legitimate.
Let’s
face it, radicals like Blagojevich have already gutted the very
few social and legal protections innocent people have left against
the depredations of killers in our society. Marriage lost its legal
protection with no-fault divorce laws in the 60s and 70s. Families
lost protection for the sanctity of the home when Hollywood junked
its self-censorship code in the mid-sixties. Unborn babies lost
their legal protection in 1973 when they were declared non-persons
by the Supreme Court. Even child murders like Joseph Duncan are
let off the hook by judges whose decrees and whose careers are totally
detached from reality. It seems that the most protected entities
in this highly regulated protectionist culture are sea turtles,
manatees and any other non-human animals that don’t even know
they are being protected.
When the radicals
in South Africa took over after apartheid one of the first acts
of the new “democratic” government was to legalize the
most extreme abortion law in the world with the 1996 Termination
of Pregnancy Act. This devastation was wholly inspired and manipulated
by Planned Parenthood and a host of other western radicals who decided
that no physician could “opt out” of abortion legally,
or if he did because of reasons of conscience, he was legally required
to refer women for abortions—another violation of conscience.
This is what
our society is approximating—coercion of conscience—where
the last bastion of freedom is breached by the barbarians of the
culture of death. Governors and judges and legislature are leading
the way. Unfortunately Illinois will soon be known as the land of
the free and the home of the spineless, and the reputation will
be well-deserved.
