Deadly Distortion:
Human Life International Denounces BBC's
"Sex and the Holy City"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday 16 October 2003

.............................................................................................

FRONT ROYAL, VA-Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president, Human Life International, calls for a worldwide protest of BBC One's vicious distortion of Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Church's teaching on abortion and contraception in its documentary "Sex and the Holy City," released as a "tribute" to the 25th anniversary of the Holy Father's papal election, celebrated today, October 16, 2003.

Sunday's program depicted the Holy Father as naïve, branded the Church a peddler of "superstition and ignorance" and unleashed a worldwide attack on Cardinal López Trujillo of the Pontifical Council for the Family, the world's foremost defender of life and family.

Father Euteneuer of HLI commented: "I want to be on record as publicly dissenting from the BBC's "infallible" opinion on our Pope and our doctrine. Any organization that is in bed with Planned Parenthood is hardly an unbiased reporter on sexual issues.

"Their totally irresponsible documentary cites a controversial statement by the World Health Organization as dogma on condom effectiveness and misrepresents the authoritative U.S. National Institutes of Health study on condoms which actually states condoms are ineffective in protecting against many sexually transmitted diseases. Our www.hli.org website cites several studies demonstrating the fallibility of condoms. Even if the WHO's estimate of a 10 percent condom failure rate is to be taken seriously, every act of condom intercourse still deals a 10 percent chance of death. This must be why even the WHO says that abstinence is the best way to go.

"The BBC can't show us a world where condoms are effective in preventing AIDS because that world doesn't exist! Despite an explosion of condom distribution throughout Africa over the past twenty years, the HIV/AIDS rate has increased exponentially. Where abstinence has been tried, like Uganda, the AIDS rate has dropped precipitously. You'd think they'd get the message," concludes Father Euteneuer.

HLI wholeheartedly endorses Cardinal López Trujillo's call for the inclusion of warning labels on condom packages stating that the condom is not safe.
